Between the Gothic Cathedral of Évora and the Roman Temple

Staying the night at the Pousada de Évora, the Loios Convent, means visiting a long distant passed having the privilege of reliving the history of every stone, every object including the simple and rudimental cubicles of the old Canon Regulars’ dormitories, which today have been converted into bedrooms with affable decoration.

The walls of the city of Évora which have been classified as a Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO hide in their interiors one of most beautiful Pousadas of Portugal.

This luxurious hotel in Évora is found in the historical centre of the city, between the Gothic Cathedral of Évora and the Temple of Diana.

Here you will find that the history, the finesse and the luxury are the vectors that gave rise to this majestic hotel.

The 36 rooms that make up this unit are nearly all different with their own characteristics. On the other hand, they all include wooden furniture, a mini bar, a desk and a private bathroom with bath and shower.

History

The building where today is found the”Pousada dos Lóios” is the old Monastery of S. João Evangelista or of Lóios – of the congregation of the Canons Regular (cónegos azuis).  It was founded in 1487 by D. Rodrigo Melo, the 1st Count of Olivença and constructed under license by D. João II, on lands where there once had been part of the Évora Castle of Arab origin.

This castle was in complete ruins having suffered a fire during the 1383-85 revolution, due to battles supporting D. João, Master of Avis, who was to ascend to the throne as D. João I.

In the eighteenth century this monastery underwent many alterations ordered done by the high priest Master José de Santa Marta, since its ruined state was added to by the damage done by the earthquake of 1755 which badly hit the building and the city of Évora.

In 1834, with the royal order of the closure of all the monasteries and convents of Portugal, this monastery stayed uninhabited over a long time.

In 1965, after remodelling and necessary adaptations, the monastery opened its doors again as a Pousada de Portugal.

A particularity: the rooms are the old chambers of the Canons Regular; therefore they are nearly all different from each other.
